The Abyss: Access, Points, Ranks, Fortress Sieges & Artifacts

The Abyss system in Aion is also one where there is much confusion and misinformation between the players. Like i did with the Stigma system, I tried to gather all available info and compress it for you here.

Note: This article is not up-to-date with the latest ingame info, still have to update it.

How to access/reach the Abyss
Once your character turns lvl 25 you'll gain the Abyss Entry Quest (AS,EL) you have to finish the quest chain to be able to use the Abyss gates you can find in
Asmodians: Altgard and Morheim
Elyos: Verteron and Eltnen

The Abyss
When you zone into the Abyss you'll start at your main faction stronghold in the lower Abyss. For Asmodians its Primum Stronghold at Primum Landing and for Elyos its Teminon Stronghold at Teminon Landing.

This stronghold is a safe zone as its being protected by some insta-death force-field against the other factions. The starter fortress has various NPCs (vendors, bank, etc.), a bind-point Obelisk plus a teleporter to take you back to the normal zones. The Balaur NPC faction inhabits all layers of the Abyss and can attack fortresses and will take part in the Abyss fights. The mechanism and the way the Balaur act are not very well known yet, but it can happen they show up anytime. All of the Abyss is a flight zone and there are certain flight-rings that will enable you to fly longer distances (the quest will explain it).

Like on the first picture the Abyss consists of upper, lower and core part. For better orientation here are maps of the three different zones:

Lower Abyss
Contains 3 fortresses and 8 artifacts

Abyss Core
Contains 1 fortress and 9 artifacts

Upper Abyss
Contains 5 fortresses and 14 artifacts

From the lower Abyss you can reach the upper Abyss part via transportation lightbeam tunnels which you can find at the Eastern and Western Shards of Latesran. Once your faction holds a fortress you can teleport there by means of the normal teleporter at your stronghold as well from what i hear. The Abyss core you can reach through the middle of the upper Abyss.

Abyss Fortresses & artifacts
Inside the Abyss are a total of 31 artifacts. Either of the three factions can hold them. Should you capture an artifact, you can hold it for 24h. Your legion emblem will be displayed on it as well. There are 14 different artifact abilities that can be accessed pending on which artifact you own. To activate artifacts you need Artifact Activation Stones that are crafted by Alchemists. Only Legion Masters can use the artifacts with default legion settings. Artifacts will be guarded by NPCs from the faction that owns them.
» More info about artifacts and their various abilities

The nine Abyss fortresses are guarded by an Aetheric force field that prevents assaults from the air. You have to take down the gate (looked rather quick from the videos i saw so far) and then destroy the Aetheric field generator to enable air-assaults. Defending players can operate a Gate Restoration Device (needs Castle Gate Restoration Stone from stronghold vendor) from inside the castle to repair the Gate Guardian Stone and delay the attackers. The Attackers can use siege weapons in their assault to bring down doors faster. From the looks of it a component from every crafting skill is needed to craft a Siege Weapon (cooking brews the Driving Water). There are also Multiple Fire Cannons you can buy from the legion vendor. Some kind of keep guardian NPC boss is present inside the fortress from what i saw. You have to kill him to claim the fortress. Once done, NPCs from your faction will re-populate the fortress. Ownership of the fortress will go to the legion that contributed the most (no idea how the system works, but i guess most Abyss points accumulation during the siege).

Claiming fortresses will yield, beside some other rewards like Abyss points, silver and gold medals you need to buy the higher ranking Abyss gear. I heard that medals are handed out to the top ten (3 Golden Contribution Decoration and 7 Silver Contribution Decoration) people with most damage done. Note: This info is not exactly correct, but you'll get the picture. No one knows the exact amount of medals given out or the formula. Seems to be more then ten tho. The medals can be traded (or sold via broker) and since its damage done, some guilds come up with a system to redistribute them since tanks/healers won't top the list. A rumour i heard said that a legion claiming a fortress would earn some money for their efforts from some kind of taxes the fortress accumulated and keep getting kinah every 12 hours from it. I also read something about a timetable for sieges, which would mean not all forts are attackable at all times but only during certain days (Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday). The new Abyss Fortress Dungeons implemented with patch 1.5 can only be accessed if your faction owns the fortress.

In Aion there are short ingame Abyss Keep Sieging Tutorials, check the link for videos (watch in HD to read text).

Earning Abyss Points & Ranks
Your character info window will show you your current rank, abyss points and recent data about earning & losing them. While you accumulate abyss points your rank will increase, should you lose/spend Abyss points your rank will decrease. They also act as a currency for buying Abyss gear with them. Here is a table, that i found (1,2), which will explain the system a bit more:

Grade 9 Soldier is the lowest rank and Supreme Commander the highest. The column "Required Positions" is labeled a bit misleading, it shows the maximum number of players that can have this rank. There will only be one Supreme Commander for example. The sorting inside the ranks is done by total amount of Abyss points the players currently have. If eg. there are more players with enough points to have a certain rank, but fewer spots per table, only those with the highest amount of points will have that rank. The others will be "downgraded" a rank.

The table does not reflect the whole abyss point system, since eg. you'll get less points should you kill a player that only has half HP, but should be close enough to give you an idea about it. "Points Gained" are points you would get by killing a player with that rank. "Points Lost" refers to the points you'll loose at a certain rank being killed. Looking at the table makes it obvious that in the beginning (with lower ranks) you don't lose that many points, but the higher your Abyss rank, the more points you will lose should someone kill you. I'm not sure if the same system (if you kill a NPC five levels lower then your level in Aion you won't get XP/loot) applies for Abyss points as well, so if eg. you kill someone 10 ranks lower then you you'd get nothing. There is a larger discussion about how your playstyle will change depending on Abyss rank. Here is a translated interview with a high ranking korean player. Basicly he describes how his playstyle changed and the higher his rank, the more careful he had to become only to pick fights on his terms. From the discussion there are also players that claim the best route at a certain point is to just grind NPCs and do repetitive quests inside the Abyss to gain Abyss points, since its "safer". Getting killed at very high Abyss rank will result in losing AP worth a few hours grind. Time will tell how this system works out and how it will change.

What is the motivation to keep rank and not cash everything in immediately? Well, some of the gold Abyss gear is very costly in abyss points and you need to save quite a while for them. Beside the prestige of keeping a high rank, each player with rank 5 Star Officer or higher will get access to a special Abyss transformation skill that will enable you to transform into a powerful avatar for around 10min (cooldown is two hours). Each rank higher up you gain more special skills you can use while in this transformed state. You need to buy ingredients with Abyss points to use the transformation. For a 5 Star Officer it costs 3000AP to transform, each higher rank costs 500AP more.
» More info about the Abyss transformation abilities.

You earn Abyss Points (AP) via killing the other faction (players & NPCs), killing Balaur & other Abyss NPCs, claiming an Abyss fortress and from quests. Even before lvl 25 there are a few quests that will give you abyss points. I also heard rumours about some rare quest you can get while crafting that will yield 10.000K and 700 AP. You lose Abyss Points by getting killed inside the Abyss and by the other faction or by spending the points on gear. The gear you buy with Abyss points has no rank requirement to wear it. So once you bought it, you'll be able to use it.

The dilemma to solve for many players will be: When to cash in your Abyss points? Of course the higher lvl abyss items are much better, but maybe cashing in early will give you an advantage? I know some players are eyeing boots with a speed boost (important for PvP) first and Abyss points seem to be the first reliable way to obtain them early on. As an example: The Guardian Squad Leader's Plate Boots are lvl 30, blue crafted boots are lvl 33 (tho expensive ingredients required and an armorsmith master (rank 400)) and blue quest rewards are lvl 40 (AS, EL). Maybe you'll get lucky with a world drop, but no way to count on that. Saving points will also depend a bit on your skill and playstyle. You also have to take into account that the high lvl Abyss items need medals to pay for as well. Personally i like the idea to use PvP points as a currency and you have to think about how/when to spend them.

Hope this could shine some light on the Abyss, please correct me if you spot any errors in the report.

More MiniMaps

I posted three more MiniMaps in the Aion Zone Maps thread: Altgard, Poeta and Verteron. I'm also working on a longer article about the Abyss, which I'll post later today or tomorrow. Stay tuned.
To keep you entertained, here are two more videos for you:
1. Aion ENU - Origins a kind of lore explanation video how it came to the cataclysm.
2. Aion - Finding True Manhood a Michael Jackson looking guy searching for his Manhood. This video looks promising we'll see many more machinima with Aion. It also shows a few scenes from the new dungeons, like the pirate ship.

Ishalgen MiniMap

Still playing around with some Aion gfx stuff and created a complete minimap (from the radar images) for Ishalgen. Not sure if i want to do the work for all other zones as well, but could imagine creating some more and add then to the Aion Zone Maps post. Maybe those could be useful for closer orientation or as a basis for exploring.

Aion Dance Video

Just saw a "music video" made in Aion:

Why is it that many Aion videos keep reminding me about Hinoi Team?

Scary, i know. Maybe we should create our own version of one of these asian game shows? Hmm...

Strange Quest Rewards

Those of you that played WAR will remember the ton of grey items you could get via quests that were supposed to have a hidden purpose (but had none). While questing in the asmodian starter zone i encountered the Treasure of the Deceased quest, that grants you the Brooch of Ghost item as an additional reward. Does anyone know what to do with that or saw other grey quality rewards from quests yet? Maybe in Aion those items have a hidden purpose? When you use the "sell misc" button at a vendor, the brooch won't be added by default. You can sell it if you wish tho. Initially i thought there might be some connection with this ghost soldier running around the graveyard, since he did not seem to have any purpose either. I did not incquire further since i wanted to get my wings asap, but will have a look for it again come retail or open beta.

Aion Zone Maps

While i was poking around with Aion stuff i realized that neither Powerwiki nor AionSource got all zone maps correct online. So i figured I would upload you all zone maps and link some additional information. This post is to be understood as a work-in-progress, I'll try to fill in some more zone information when i get there. The level range is just a rough guess from me, since i did not play past lvl 21 yet. The Elysea maps are for you Elyos players, but since I'll be Asmodian, don't expect them to become filled with info. ;)
Feel free to use the comments to augment these infos...

Aion Stigma System

The Stigma system is rather important in Aion and will open up to you with lvl 20. Due to all the different patches and also different translations from asian sources there are a lot of outdated and wrong informations circling the net. I don't claim my rundown is 100% correct, but goes as far as i experienced and read about it.

Once your char reaches lvl 20 you'll automaticly gain a quest called No Escaping Destiny (Memory Of The Past is the Elyos version). The quest is a pain in the arse since you have to run all over the lowbie area again to visit several NPCs that will just send you on to the next one. I guess it was done so some higher level chars will give the newbies a show with gliding wings and gear. IMO it's a tad too long and half the NPCs would have been suffice. Anyway, its well worth doing it as soon as you get the quest. Once you finish the quest you will have access to two Stigma slots, get your first Stigma Stone for free and get 300 Stigma Shards. The Stigma Stones are rare (green) drops from monsters. You can freely trade them or sell them at the broker.

Tip: Check the questline for your class and which Stigma Stone you'll be granted as a reward. Not necessary to buy/trade that stone since you'll get it for free.

To equip a Stigma Stone you need to visit the Stigma Master in the capitol city. For Asmodians its Aud (quest will lead you there as well). Equipping it will cost you 4x[lvl of Stigma Stone] in Stigma Shards. The quest gives you 300 which is enough to equip/change Stigmas three times. Stigma Shards are obtained by killing enemy faction guards and NPCs in the Abyss afaik. Once you "fuse" the Stigma Stone into a slot, you'll gain the attached skill for it and can use it like any other skill. You can only equip Stigma Stones that are for your class. There was the possibility for some time to use cross-class stones, but it was removed.

Important: So far (dunno if they'll fix this) if you fuse another Stigma Stone on top of an already equipped one, you'll destroy the old stone. You can however take out Stigma Stones (and still trade them afterwards?) first and keep them.

The first three available Templar Stigma Stones are:
Divine Fury I (lvl 20) -> Divine Fury I
Useful Stigma skill to have and you get it for free (quest reward) anyway. Ups your DPS for a short amount of time.
old name: Indignation

Holy Shield I (lvl 20) -> Holy Shield I
Not that useful early on, when i tried it out during a normal fight i reflected back 184dmg (triggered 4 times in the 10 secs) to the attacking mob. As you usually don't want to get hit by that many NPCs anyway, don't pay too much for this one. I hear the later version could be useful in PvP.

Inescapable Judgment I (lvl 22) -> Inescapable Judgment I
I only leveled my Templar to lvl 21 so far, but from what i hear this Stigma is very cool. Useful in PvE and PvP - must have basicly.
old name: Stunning Strike

Note: The term "Gains Stigma" is just misleading, only refers to you having the stigma skill and nothing else.

Stigma Stones at the broker really go from a few hundred Kinah up to several hundred thousand, depending on class/skill. As you can only have two in the beginning I'll probably settle with Indignation & Stunning Strike if i can obtain them early on.

More Stigma Slots will open up later on:
lvl 20: 2 Stigma Slots
lvl 30: 3 Stigma Slots
lvl 40: 4 Stigma Slots
lvl 50: 5 Stigma Slots

With patch 1.5 there will be the addition of three advanced Stigma slots, which can be unlocked by doing certain questlines. Advanced Stigma slots can hold either new advanced Stigma Stones or the regular Stigma Stones. Advanced Stigma Stones can't be equipped into the normal slots tho and can only be equipped when certain prerequisite Stigma Stones are equipped. The picture shows a "chain" for those advanced Stigmas, the prerequisite can be one or two basic Stigma Stones. Example: To equip one of the lvl 50 advanced Stigma Stones you need to have five prerequisite stones equipped. The playerbase is still devided if the new high lvl advanced stigmas are worth equipping all the prerequisite ones. From what i saw you can start that questline at lvl 40, but can obtain the first advanced Stigma slot with lvl 45. The new Shugo Pirate dungeon is involved in this questline it seems. Advanced Stigma Stones can be purchased via Abyss points (13.750pts for lvl 45 and 38.700pts for lvl 50 ones), not sure if they can also drop from NPCs.

For more concrete Information i guess we'll have to wait for the Powerwiki to be updated.

Update:
More infos about the new 1.5 Advanced Templar Stigmas here.

Note: One of the last patches lowered the Stigma Shard requirements. I think it 3xlevel now you have to pay.

Treasure Boxes

During the last beta event i found a Treasure Box in a cave in Morheim. The first one i saw so far, but looks like it could be worth having an open eye out for those. I don't know how their loot tables are and if eg. you can be lucky enough to get a green/blue from them. I also heard about a Gigantic Box "boss", which you have to attack for a very long time since you only do 1dmg to it. It's always a nice touch if you can find stuff while leaving the normal paths. There is a bunch of named mobs every now and then as well, from some i got pretty neat things during the beta. Despite many zones have a quite linear feeling, things like this give me hope there is stuff to discover and explore.

In addition i wanted to mention two funny videos i saw for Aion:
1. The Personal Shop Trap - LOL
2. Obama plays Aion - the whole video I'm waiting he takes out a precioussss ring, especially after the scene where he caught the fish. ;)

Impetusium of Glory (Aion Lore)

This text can be found on a bookshelf in the Temple of Knowledge

Preface
This work sets out to explain how the Impetusium, the great coliseum of the Daeva, was first built in Atreia and why it subsequently vanished from the center stage of history. Reader, if you have ever seen the magnificent ruins of the Impetusium and wondered what the story behind those titanic toppled columns might have been, I urge you to read further. To Shaga, and to the countless heroes of the Impetusium whose names are lost to history, this work is respectfully dedicated.

Chapter 1: The Emergence of Sword Fighting
The origin of the Impetusium is found in a period of history not long after the Epic Cataclysm, when the Asmodian people were focused on suppressing the savage Mau.
The Five Empyrean Lords, who were preoccupied with rebuilding Atreia and healing the painful legacy of the Epic Cataclysm, decided to eliminate all the remaining allies of the Balaur. Many of them were already expelled from the Aetheric Field. However, the Black Claw Mau, the running dog of the Balaur, was still wielding power in Altgard. Several renowned Legions were sent to subdue the Mau tribe. They set up camp to the south of the Altgard Ice Lake, in the region that is now called Impetusium. It was natural that the Legions should compete among themselves as they prepared for battle with the Mau, to keep their skills sharp and to boost morale. This fraternal sparring was to become the foundation of Impetusium.

Chapter 2: The Construction of Impetusium
With the war against the Mau ending in victory for the Asmodians, the Five Shedim Lords declared that a permanent arena should be built upon the site where the Legions had encamped in Altgard. They believed all brave Asmodian warriors would benefit from training in dueling with the sword. As many master artisans, architects and other famous Daevas of the time participated in building Impetusium, the construction progressed rapidly. The Arena, decreed Pandaemonium, was to be built in a 'grand and classical style.' Even in the ruins, the outlines of this style can still be traced. With the construction of Impetusium, sword fighting became a highly popular method of competition. There were duels to settle points of honor, for recreation, for cash prizes, even to settle marriage suits. Daevas came to the arena in huge numbers from all over Asmodae to duel with one another. In the broader context of Atreian history, dating back to time immemorial, Impetusium lasted only a few fleeting moments. Nonetheless, in that time it produced numerous heroes who enjoyed the praise and adoration of the public.

Chapter 3: Shaga, the Legend of Impetusium
The name 'Shaga' will be instantly familiar to anyone who has studied the history of Impetusium to even the smallest degree. Shaga arrived at the Arena seemingly out of nowhere, and became a legendary hero. Instantly recognizable in his black helmet and black armor, a solitary red feather on the breastplate, he had no peer among all Impetusium's fighters. The ringside poets said of him that he moved as lightly as breeze-blown apple blossom, and struck with the sudden ferocity of a summer storm. Shaga's legend was not confined to the Arena. A true wandering hero, it was said he would appear whenever and wherever people needed help. He never spoke, but instead greeted people with his gentle gaze. Many women who glimpsed those eyes through his visor were smitten, and became sick with love. It was not until much, much later that the most astonishing fact about Shaga was revealed. He was not a he at all, but a she.

Chapter 4: The Glory of Old Altgard
Some Daevas still remember the days when Impetusium held sword fighting competitions. 'You should have seen Altgard back then,' they say, their eyes shining. 'It was not the muddy backwater that it is now. It was prosperous beyond imagination.' Impetusium bustled with talented Daevas from all over Asmodae, excited humans who had come to spectate, and street stalls of every conceivable kind. Every day was like a state holiday. Exotic food cooking in the roadside stands set people's mouths watering, and no street corner was without its huddle of beribboned supporters, talking and laughing together. The noise was ceaseless. Of course, crowds caused occasional disturbances here and there as they always do, but any quarrel or dispute was quickly settled in those days. Unruly brawling in the street was seen as an insult to the event, and to the noble Daevas who worked so hard to improve themselves and given so much for the contest.

Chapter 5: The Decline of Impetusium
Those peaceful and festive days in which Impetusium thrived did not last for long. The discovery of Elysea beyond the Abyss marked the end of peace. The Shedim Lords assigned all Asmodian Daevas to fight the Abyss War. With Altgard no longer a main rallying point, it was decided that Impetusium should be closed down. Although a few Daevas objected to the decision, the majority understood that the dark clouds of the Elyos-Asmodian War had cast a chill over the excitement of the great arena. It was no longer a time for sport, but for battle.

Postscript
Just as I was finishing this book, I heard good news from Pandaemonium. To commemorate the proud history of Asmodae, the Five Shedim Lords have declared that Impetusium should be restored to its former glory! One day soon, reader, the skies may once again ring with the sound of blade on blade, and we may see brave Daevas competing with one another for glory and praise, as they did in Shaga's time.

May that day come soon.

Aion review from CB3 - Blood for Blood!

This is a repost from my initial Aion review on Stunty Stomper. Figured i should post it in my new Aion blog as well. I fixed some old infos where it applied.

During the closed Beta Weekend 3 i was able to check out the upcoming Aion MMO some. Since i know a bunch of people are interested in it i took the time to give you a rundown from my perspective. I leveled an Asmodian Templar (Tank) up to level 18 during that weekend. So all my findings will be based on what i saw during that time. Also important to note: Apparently NCsoft will release Aion with version 1.5, so there are several patches missing (translations: 1.1 / 1.2 / 1.5) on the EU/US servers at the moment. Some things might get fixed with those, where i know it will its mentioned in my article.

Before we start to talk about the game, let me say a few words about the GameGuard software, a hacking prevention software that Aion uses, which sucks a lot. I know many players had trouble with it, me as well. I had to deinstall (not simpy disable) my NetLimiter (firewall & bandwidth shaper) as else i would get some error window that only told me some korean gibberish with no hint towards the problem. Users of 64bit windows had major trouble as well, those had to exchange some files taken from another game to fix their problem. I fail to understand how a company can use such a crappy software that does not even yield a proper error message in the first place. Lets hope they improve it, but from what i hear people are not happy with GameGuard, tho its unlikely to change.

Who will have fun in Aion? Well, if you dislike grinding at all - Aion is not the game for you. Period. If you need the game to take you by the hand for everything or want a rich storyline with a lot of lore - Aion is probably not the right game for you. Can casual gamers have fun in Aion? Yes, they can but the most fun you'll have while playing with a good guild (called Legion in Aion). Due to the way things work a good guild will speed up your progress a lot. The game itself immediately reminded me of some of those typical asian free-to-play grind MMOs (like 2Moons and such), but its a notch better done. A lot of features are not really explained inside the ingame manual and you have to figure them out yourself. I'd suggest that this gets fixed before release, else the whining will be huge since people have no idea how to use certain things.

Graphics
The game looks very good. Character customization at character creation (and also later on) is huge, a lot of stuff to play with. Despite the lower polygon count used for models in Aion, they made good use of some high-quality textures on the monsters and the surroundings. Like so many other games they have a bunch of places with blurry/bad textures as well, but the overall feeling when you run around is great. In general the maps are nicely done, tho often a tad colorful for my taste... guess thats the asian influence. Several monsters or plants/trees have a cool and unique look to them tho, you don't think i saw this similar model a hundred times already. Some races are the "cute kind", like large squirrels or pandas - but heh, who does not like to slaughter cute Mumu herb gatheres while they do nothing wrong but work?

Audio
There is a lot of good and catching music in Aion. Sometimes it feels a bit out of place when the different themes switch, but overall there is a larger amount of good music then in many other games.

UI in general
The Aion UI is nothing special or really new. It looks clean and has enough features to work with tho. Often i wish it had more options to turn off some confirmation windows or other parts to save a few clicks, but its ok to use. You can't freely place or resize the UI, its rather limited in ways to modify. Annoying: It seems at many places the UI is missing tooltips to explain what certain settings or attributes do. The UI luckily has a moderate color/feel to it so not to distract you from the gameplay. Everything you look for in a MMO UI is basicly there, can't remember important parts missing. Annoying is that you can't switch the camera view to look freely around while running into a direction, maybe its because coordination in flight later on, not sure. You can use the middle mouse button to switch the camera 180 degree and eg. look behind you while running forward, but thats about it... else you'll always run where you look. Note: Someone mentioned patch 1.5 has enabled left mouse button to rotate camera and also invert mouse. The UI has many auto move/pathing features that will make your toon run by its own. Parts of it can be disbled (stick to target) but some others can't. This can be tricky if your toon starts running off and aggros close by mobs because by accident you clicked a gather note.

Instanced gameplay

The game world is instanced. While one instance (called channel) can hold a lot of people (no idea how many) it seems at any point there are 10 channels from any given area. Not so sure about the main capitol, can't remember if that was instanced as well. You see a lot more players running around then eg. i saw in AoC instances tho. The game engine supports a large amount of players and runs very smooth and stable. While playing i seldom had lag and even with 50+ players on your screen inside the main city the performance is very good, no heavy drop in FPS for me. You can change channels by choice any time you wish. If you're in a group you can choose to teleport into the group leader's instance from the group menu. If certain quest points are camped you can always try to switch the channel to avoid the crowd. Sometimes this helps, sometimes not. I also hear that only the first few areas in the game have channels, later on and in the Abyss there is only one - anyone knows this exactly?
Note: I heard tho, come launch the channel change will have a 10-15min delay. So no avoiding crowd or farming named mobs with channel change.
Edit: Only the initial zones are instanced. The lvl 20+ zones only have one channel.

Leveling/Quests/Grinding
During the beta weekend there were a few points when you ran low/out of quests and needed to grind a little bit to get to the next level. From what i read one of the patches added a bunch of more quests to help with that. When it comes to leveling you can do both questing or grinding. It will depend on what you do which is more effective. If you get a small group of people and grind those elite mob areas, this can yield very good XP. I was going solo at some point and killed mobs 3-4 levels above me and that yielded very good XP as well. It will depend on your level, your gear and if you're solo or in a group, but so far it looks like you don't have to quest. Tho usually the quests will lead you through the areas and some follow-up quests will give you item rewards. Every so often a quest will give you a short intro with a cutscenes (using the game engine), which can really add to some stories, but often felt a bit out of place. I'd rather have a sequence explaining me what happened then show me some abandoned hut in the middle of the forrest i never saw before. There is a quest helper system in place and when a quest text mentiones a certain NPC, mob race or place you can "locate" them and if possible get a mark on your map where to go to, sometimes things are at hidden/hard to reach places and it does not work.

During leveling i had two aspects that annoyed me big time:
1. Loot rights are given to the person/group that did the highest damage to a mob it seems. This results in high damage classes to "steal" the mob you have been fighting already. There are a few quests on a timer, you already fight a mob down to 70% HP to get a quest drop and some sorc jump in, kills the mob with a tad higher damage then you, grabs the stuff and runs off. I met a bunch of players that did this by intend. Supernice.
2. Sometimes there is a very long respawn timer on quest objectives (you scouted the area already three times only to realize the object spawns on a table you ran past several times) or quest mobs. I did a few quests where only special mobs would drop the needed items and in the whole frickin' village spawned 3-4 of those for like 15-20 players running around there. Add point 1 to that and go figure the annoyance.

There will be griefing and spawn camping in Aion on a larger scale then in some other MMOs.

A nice feature during fights inside NPC villages and such: Many NPCs alert each other when attacked or start to run away and alert others when low on health. You'll really have to watch were you are going and which mobs to pull later on if you're leveling in areas where the mobs are challenging to you. In addition ranged NPCs are hard to move, looks like they use their ranged "attack skill" also when close to you. So no step-by-stepp pulling them back. To a certain degree you can work around it with corner pulls and such. Training NPCs into other players is rather easy as well and i can imagine this leads to griefing as well. When you run away too far from a mob it will reset and leash back, BUT can aggro players on the way sometimes. While you kill mobs somewhere one idiot running away with a large groups of mobs on his tail is often enough to get you killed, so watch whats happening around you. Overall fighting mobs is more challenging then in many other MMOs, which is refreshing. I also hear rumours about a hate list system used beside the normal aggro system. Mobs can have certain "rules" why to hate certain players more then others.

Combat
Killings monsters feels like its taking longer and more effort then in WAR, WoW or AoC. Depending on the level difference against a mob you will use several different skills before the mob drops dead. When fighting equal level monsters you use a few skills to kill it, but i had to use at least one rotation from all available skills at the early levels to kill it. Level difference has a major effect on the power the mob has and the time it takes to kill it. If you fight a mob three levels higher then you, its already dangerous if you get adds at the wrong point and you'll have to use several skill rotations to kill it. Combat overall feels good tho, the animations are very fluid and if i use a shield bash my toon will really take his shield and smash it into the foe. Combat skills are used similar to Black Orcs in WAR. While you have "single hit skills" as well, the best skills are part of a chain which opens up after you used the starter skill. Depending on your level you get more skills to use as 2nd or 3rd. The chains are easy enough to identify/use since there is a good display for them and when they become available they'll start to glow. Then you got a few seconds to press the corresponding key. There is no skill "queue", so if you press the needed key to early it won't fire. Should you use a different skill while moving down a chain, the chain will be lost since you need to wait for the starter skill to come off cooldown again. The different chains for my templar had 1-3 branches they could lead to. Many skills are in reaction to eg. block, parry, etc. ergo only open up if the condition is met. Playing my templar from the skill system itself really felt like being on my Black Orc, i can live with that. The fights sometimes feel a tad long, if you bang with two people on some elite mob it can take forever to get it down. On the other side you have the feeling something is happening, the good animations underline that feeling. The fight animations and sounds are a bit too much mortal combat IMO, but i read somewhere one of the patches gives you an option to disable at least most of the "mortal combat ninja cries" your toon does while fighting.

The skills use MP (Mana Points) and Divine Points (DP), some are free without any costs. DP are collected through fighting players & NPCs, through dealing/taking damage. You can't store DP and should you die or log off, that bar goes to zero. DP skills are really powerful from what i saw. It takes quite a while until you filled your DP bar enough to use a skill.

Death
If you die you'll get a short debuff (1min) reducing movement speed, lose 3% of XP and resurrect at your last binding location. You can pay a Soul Healer to get 2% XP back, does not matter if you do it while you still have the debuff or not, the rest is lost forever. If you adventure into dangerous areas its adviced you spend a few coin to bind before you go so you don't respawn too far away. It's annoying to have to wait for people to travel back across the continent. If you die there is a 30min timer another player can resurrect you. You can buy resurrection stones rather cheap from general goods vendors - good investment to be able to rez your cleric if things go wrong.

Items
Come in different quality: grey (trash), white, green, blue and orange. During to the beta weekend i sometimes found green items (a few levels better then white) and one blue chest piece from a named mob. There is a neat item comparision system in place and if you compare two items red/green indicator will tell you which stats are worse/better on the different items. Item tooltips are a bit unclear tho, could use some work. I found it very annoying tho, that many items have the same name, but very different stats on them. You really need to look at them in detail. Very few items in the game seem to be bind on pickup, from what i hear only the boss loot from the high-end dungeons will be BoP. The vendors have a button to sell all misc (grey) items. All UI parts that deal with items work more like an online shop, you can choose the stuff you want to buy and then have to press the final button to check out and confirm the transaction.

Tips:
# strg+left-click on an item will open up a preview dressing window.
# strg+right-click will link an item into chat.

Auction House & Private Stores
There are brokers in major cities. The AH interface is a bit cumbersome and lacks more filters (stuff like enter item level filter was improved in 1.1 apparently). The amount of items you can list at the AH is limited (dunno exactly how many). If you buy stuff from the AH it goes directly into your inventory. If you sell stuff at the AH, you need to "settle your account" at the trader to obtain the money. There is a private store system in Aion. At any place you can start your own private shop and sell stuff from your inventory. Many players use it while being afk. Some major areas in the capitol city are *full* of private shops, you can spend a lot of time to run from player to player and see what they offer. When you open the shop you can put one line of text in, which will be displayed over your head - also often used for guild recruiting messages etc.

Tip: Double left-click on a player-store to automaticly run to that player and open the shop interface. Since players move right into the player with the shop sometimes it can be hard to target them.

Mailbox system works like in every other MMO. Its a bit confusing tho as you have "normal" delivery (which is instant into the other mailbox already) and "express" - unfortunately i did not test this, but i read this results in a Shugo (small squirrel/hamster NPC) messenger coming to the recipient and delivering the letter.

Group/Party System
There is no real LFG system, which makes the task of finding a party for certain elite quests a bit harder. One reason I'd only play Aion with other people i know. A party can have up to six people, a raid up to 24 players. There is no need/greed loot roll system, only roll dice or abandon roll. This should be improved IMO. In the group distribution you have some nice additional features. You can distribute money to group members, can choose to auto distribute misc items, there is a master looter and some strange bidding system wherer you loot for coin you bid (and coin is distributed between party members).

NPCs have some sort of point indicator next to their name when targeted, this shows you how strong the mob is. While i can easily kill a mob with 1-2 points on my own, those with 4 points could be very tough cookies, sometimes impossible for me to kill solo, depending on the mob. Some quests don't indicate that they are group/elite mission and you'll need to group up. So you'll need to watch out if you run into some elite area.

From what i hear there will be several high-level dungeons available a release, some instanced some with PvP in them. Tho i doubt you should expect very complicated scripted encounters from what the game felt to me. I'm sure the bosses will have some tricks up the sleeve, but thats about it.

Flying/Gliding
With level 10 you'll finish a quest chain and "earn your wings". Despite what many people think you CAN NOT FLY EVERYWHERE in Aion. At least in the first areas there are only few places you can fly freely. Depending on the wings you have and gear stats, etc. you'll have a certain amount of flight time (rather limited). Once the timer runs out you'll get a nasty (fun!) warning *meeep meeeep* and start to fall. Yes, you can die if you fall deep enough. ouch.
What you can do everywhere is glide. You do this by jumping down a slope, just jumping from any higher place and use space again to spread your wings. Many players fail to grasp the concept of gliding, so here is how to: As long as you glide downhill and don't get stuck uphill or at an obstacle you can glide until your timer uns out. Gliding over water is good as well. Don't push your forward movement button while gliding, only adjust your direction by going left and right - this way you can glide a very long time if the area supports it and you use the environment smart. While gliding you will aggro mobs and they can hurt you, so be aware of that. Utilizing gliding properly will speed your movement up a lot.

Other forms of transportation include a flight master system between major hubs inside the same area and teleports between the different regions. So far there are no plans for mounts from what i hear. You can upgrade your wings later on tho. You also have a personal teleport skill (20min cooldown) you can bind at various obelisks, this does cost a small fee.

Swimming
You can't swim in Aion. Should you enter water deep enough, you'll simply walk on the ground under water. *lol* There is a system that will damage you when you enter "deep water".

Title System
By means of questing (and maybe other things) you'll obtain titles. The thing in Aion is that titles have a small stat boost attached to them. So if you wear a title (and only then) you'll get that stat boost. The title system is not very intuitive and i disabled title display on PCs rather quick as it looks annoying because the title is displayed together with the player name. I never saw a message that i acquired a new title either, so check the title list from time to time.

There are many ways to enhance your gear/weapons: manastones (gems you socket into gear), enchantment stones (obtained by "disenchanting" gear with vendor bought tools), power shards (drop from mobs can be bough at vendor) that enhance your weapon damage for one hit. The different ways to enhance your gear are not very intuitive at first, check here for more info.

Crafting
I tried crafting a tiny bit. Crafting overall does take a long time and some major coin. You'll have to to go into the main city for crafting stations. No crafting anywhere else. There are normal crafted items and you can crit on a craft, resulting in a better item. There is some wierd upgrading system, where you basicly take an already crafted item, add some more materials and refinement stones and then create a better version. Since crafting can fail (no idea about the mechanism) i can imagine it will take a lot of time and materials to craft the best gear. Apparently you can train all crafting trades up to 399 skill, but only master one to 450 skill.
Gathering materials is done in two ways: You gather stuff like ore, food, plants, etc. from the floor and you have to gather aether that is floating around in the air in flying enabled zones.

Armor dyeing (so far i only saw vendor bought dyes) did look like crap ony my plate armor due to the armor reflections not working together well with the new colors.

Legions (Guilds) System

There is a guild system implemented and you eg. get a guild vault with a guild plus some other organization tools. A lvl 1 guild (register) cost 10.000 Qina (coins in Aion) and can have max. 30 members. You'll get a random crest assigned for the guild cloaks (also displays on player tooltip). Lvl 2 guild can be obtained while having at least 10 members and paying 100.000 Qina. You get to choose a crest from a certain pool and your guild can have max. 60 members. A guild rank 3 can upload their own crest (if you can really upload and not just create one, thats cool) and have 90 members, but you need to pay 1.000.000 Qina and obtain 20.000 Abyss/Legion points (from PvP and maybe fighting the 3rd faction inside the Abyss).

The fluff stuff
Aion has a lot of fluff stuff, like googles, funny hats, festival dresses, etc. Very early on you get cool disguises via quests as well. Lets not even start to talk about remodel shops that will let you switch even the 3D model your gear displays, if you got enough coin. There is a lot of stuff to spend gold on: resurrection stones, teleport scrolls, custom 2h binding stone scrolls, etc. Overall there are many money sinks already in the game. Some of the stuff you buy from the vendors is really useful.

NCcoin?!?
One thing that jumped my eye while reading over the user agreement, they mention NCcoin as some kind of currency to pay for ingame items with real money. I'm not sure if this will really make it into the game, but i know many hope it does not. Also paying a monthly fee (no one knows yet how much for EU/US) as for other MMOs would not be welcome if they make money on the side with this.

Due to the nature of the game you'll be able to spend hours by trying to improve crafting, gathering materials, etc. The later game levels are supposed to be a bit of grind, but then again even WAR or WoW felt like that in the end, tho i assume the feeling might be more present in Aion. Will Aion be a game i could have fun with? Only in a good guild. Should a large part of my guild mates move over to Aion, probably so would i. It's no game i would start without being part of a Legion tho. You hit the wall playing solo rather quick and the lacking LFG system does not help that much. Aion overall was better then i thought it would be, but my expectations were not that high and i doubt it will be THE upcoming MMO people waited for. I think it can be fun for a while tho. Some things are new and refreshing to look at or use. The higher challenge rating while fighting "normal" NPCs was very welcome. They had more AI to them then in the other MMOs i played recently. Most likely i forget a bunch of stuff in this review, should you have any questions or want to share your own thoughts, feel free to use the comments.

New Aion Blog

Since i decided to join the battle between Elyos, Balaur and Asmodians i thought its time to create a new blog for Aion, as Stunty Stomper somehow does not fit the context. So this will be my new Aion blog, update your links and subscribe the RSS feed. I'll already post frequently before launch from my beta experience and what other interesting stuff i come across. The blog layout & navigation is a work-in-progress until I'm satisfied with it.
